how does forking get a new master branch with newer commits than the original repository?

pulling from origin shows it still only has the older commits

hi all, I'm confused. I cloned https://github.com/proxysh/Safejumper-for-Desktop.git the other day and got a git clone with the latest commit being about a month or so ago
